The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday advertisement produced via AI following encountering widespread online backlash.

The brief ad was created via AI-generated video and was first released publicly for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Social Media Criticism and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media lambasted the employment of AI in the commercial. A number of labeled it "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This moment represents an valuable learning as we examine the proper application of AI," stated a statement from the company.

The commercial was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of things that often go badly during the Christmas break, under the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads

Campaigns that include AI tools have emerged as a growing phenomenon among large corporations, notably for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has recently released back-to-back AI-generated holiday commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because videos made with current AI video tools are prone to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked worries about job displacement in the advertising sector, with some critics pointing out it might affect opportunities for production staff.

Response from the Creators

Following the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

Bridge claimed, the development required "seven weeks" and involved generating "countless iterations" which were then edited during the edit "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".

"This was not an experiment," Bridge asserted. "It was a proper commercial."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was predominantly criticized, the response for some AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis achieved a 61% "favorable response" from online commenters.

However, various brands have likewise encountered scrutiny for employing the technique in marketing. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some described as "cheap" and "disturbing".

The incident underscores the evolving conversation within the marketing and creative sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
