British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
