Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such medications should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
